The family of slain civil rights figure Emmett Till is reacting to Mountain Dew's decision to drop an endorsement deal with Lil Wayne. Mountain Dew's move comes after mounting criticism over rap lyrics in which the rapper links a vulgar sexual reference to the murdered teenager.
In a statement, Till's cousin Airickca Gordon-Taylor calls Mountain Dew's decision "monumental." She also commends the company for taking a step toward more "social responsibility." Reflecting on the moment she first heard the lyrics, Airickca says she was "in utter shock, disappointment and sadness."
Nearly two months after the lyrics appeared, Lil Wayne responded to the criticism. In a letter to Till's family that appeared online last week, the rapper acknowledged the family's pain, but never used the word "apology."
